Active kids are happy kids!
According to the Napa County community obesity prevention plan 2015-2020, the Napa County obesity rate is 28.9 percent (CA overall is 23.2 percent) in 2013 and 40 percent for 5th, 7th, and 9th graders. Those numbers for our young people are too high and if we don’t change our focus and invest in their physical well-being then we are not investing in the success and longevity of our community. Getting your kids active can help combat life long health issues. Here are some ways to get your kids active.
Throw a dance party
When the whole family is home at night, take some time to unwind with a little dance party! Before dinner is served, pick a song and throw-down with the fambam! Get a fun cardio workout in while you all listen to your favorite jams. Bonus points if learn what all the kids are listening to these days! Here’s a kid friendly playlist!
Aerial Yoga
Aerial is a type of yoga which uses a hammock or yoga swing to allow students to perform postures that they may not ordinarily be able to attempt on the yoga mat. It is often also referred to as anti-gravity yoga. It combines traditional yoga with moves inspired by pilates, dance, and acrobatics. Kids love hovering above ground and learning new skills in the silks in a safe environment. Contact us here to inquire about our kids Aerial Yoga offerings.
Give Them Options
Kids love tasting a little bit of everything, and that includes sports and extracurriculars. Look for local dance, gymnastics, soccer, or tennis teams that your kid can join. Make sure to check with your local Boys & Girls Club or recreation department for free seasonal team sports. Being included in a team or squad teaches kids teamwork, communication, and leadership. Some of these options can get expensive so make sure to keep reading for some free kids activities.
Turn To Your Community
We are fortunate enough to live in Calistoga where kids can participate in sports and activities for free. Check in with your city’s Parks & Recreation department to see if they offer any free activities. Calistoga Recreation offers free sports like Tennis and fun dance classes that we host and coach.
